> Billing and revenue cycle teams use ICD Code Finder to check diagnosis codes before claims go out - whether a code is valid and complete for the current fiscal year, whether it is missing a 7th character, and whether two codes conflict under an Excludes1 note - and to keep shared, checked code sets for common services. It is a reference and checking tool, not a claim scrubber or payer-policy engine.

## Key takeaways

- The Code Set Builder flags invalid codes, non-billable headers, missing 7th characters and Excludes1 conflicts.
- Code validity depends on the fiscal year of the date of service; FY changes are listed on the updates page.
- Team plans share code sets across members, with an audit log for owners.
- Payer policy and medical necessity rules still need to be checked separately.

Many diagnosis-code problems on claims are mechanical: a code that is a header rather than a complete code, a missing 7th character, a code deleted in the new fiscal year, or two codes that cannot be reported together. ICD Code Finder makes those checks quick, before the claim leaves.

## Check a code in seconds

Search by code or by term. Each code page shows:

- Whether the code is **billable** (complete), a **header** that needs more characters, or a code that **requires a 7th character**.
- **New** or **Revised** badges when the code changed in the current fiscal year.
- All instructional notes, including Excludes1 notes inherited from parent codes.
- The more specific codes beneath any header, so you can see what the documentation needs to support.

## Check whole sets of codes

The **Code Set Builder** lets you collect the codes for a service line, a common procedure or a claim scenario, and checks them together. It flags:

- Codes that are **not in the current code set**.
- **Non-billable headers**, with suggestions of more specific codes.
- Codes **missing a required 7th character**.
- **Excludes1 conflicts** between codes in the set.
- **Duplicates**.

Pro and Team plans include unlimited code sets and CSV and PDF exports, and email alerts when a fiscal-year update changes codes in your saved sets.

## Stay current with fiscal-year changes

ICD-10-CM changes every October 1, and the code set in effect on the date of service decides validity (the discharge date for inpatient stays). The **FY updates** page lists added, revised and deleted codes for each fiscal year. See [GEMs and the FY update cycle](/learn/gems-and-fy-update-cycle).

## Work as a team

On the **Team** plan, the subscriber becomes the team owner and invites colleagues by email. Members get Pro features plus code sets shared with the team, and owners can review a team audit log.

## What it does not do

- It is not a claim scrubber and does not check NCCI edits, payer-specific policies or CPT/HCPCS codes.
- It does not guarantee reimbursement.
- AI tools such as **Medical Necessity** give suggestions that must be verified against payer policy and the record.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can ICD Code Finder tell me if a code is billable?**

Yes. Every code page shows whether the code is a complete (billable) code, a header that needs more characters, or a code that requires a 7th character, for the current fiscal year.

**Does it check payer policies?**

No. It checks codes against the ICD-10-CM code set and its instructional notes. Payer coverage and medical necessity policies must be checked separately; the Medical Necessity AI tool can help review diagnosis support, but its output must be verified.

**How do teams share code sets?**

On the Team plan, the owner invites colleagues by email, members can work with code sets shared with the team, and the owner can review an audit log of changes.
